So, when you roll a fresh copy of your pet, the attributes you can potentially get when maxing it out are assigned randomly between the possibilities – but the attributes are normally also the multiplicators for the skills and talent so also important. So you can easily have a legendary Sand Lizard but with pretty useless attributes and it will still, even with the perfect skills on it, only perform at like 50% of the potential.

You don't have to neccessarily build the Sand Lizard towards healing as you will run him with close-range heroes that take hits, so scaling up counterattack and hitting back will also grant you a nice damage output at the end that will make it worth it.
