Below you will find the best order to unlock and level up skills by how useful they are so you don’t have to level the skills up one by one and spend a lot of extra sculptures on it. This will let you use this commander earlier and also saves you important Universal Sculptures in the long run!
Your sweetspot of skills to make this commander useful is: 5551 and this is the recommended way to get there:

Best Troops

With his 3rd skill and all other dependencies, Trajan NEEDS to be used with mixed troop types to get the most out of him (and that means you need to bring all 3 different troops types).

Best Commander Pairing for Trajan

Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great

Harald Sigurdsson The dream team of pairing Trajan for me is running him Harald Sigurdsson for the reason that Haralds 4th skill counts as an active skill and will trigger most of Trajan’s talents (see that below) so the synergy is incredibly high (See full build here).

Aethelflaed Another good setup to use is running Aethelflaed primary to hide your Trajan as he will get hunt down with priority and enjoy the synergies both of the commanders share (See full build here).

Cyrus the Great With Cyrus you also have a nice setup and punish every player hunting Trajan where you can punish really well as Cyrus will start dealing AoE damage as soon as getting attacked. The small downside is that Cyrus cares a lot about Archers so you miss out on some of the potentials here. (See full build here).

Constantine is also a pair to think about as he will buff all troop types, Hannibal Barca for the AoE debuff for a crazy buffing march (See full build here).

Alexander the Great with the bufferful protective buff are also options to consider (See full build here).

In terms of equipment, here’s what I recommend to use as the route for Trajan. There are different builds for wherever you are right now, from beginner to veteran:

Best Talent Tree Builds For Trajan

Below you will find the talent tree builds for Trajan that make sense when running as the primary commander in any march in Rise of Kingdoms. Please also refer to the description below each talent tree as I explain a general route on how you should spend your talents there + some additional background for each talent build that I very likely will appreciate.

Looking at Trajan realiticly, you should run him as the primary commander to get all his talent buffs going – and for me, there’s only one talent build that really makes sense.

Basically everything in this talent build is working hand-in-hand with Trajan’s skills. You want to get Rejuvenate in the Support Tree first, this will boost 150 extra Rage everytime Trajan uses his primary skill and applies his buff. This will make his primary skill appear faster again, generating this extra rage again and so on.

Then go to Strategix Prowess in the Leadership Tree, this will improve defense every time his active skill is used – and with Rejuvenate you already made sure that this is happening faster and faster so you will have that amazing 20% defense buff active a lot.

And with Loose Formation in the Support Tree then you reduce all skill damage taken so you further reduce the skill damage you take by further taking skill damage. Then Emergency Protection will reduce that even further everytime you take skill damage.

That’s a perfect setup to withstand in most brawls with Trajan and make his powerful apply to as many allies as it can.

Attention! Running Trajan with a healing commander? Well, then you should swap the left side talents in the Leadership Tree (Armored to the Teeth) and invest them into the healing-based talents (Counterattack) in the Support Tree.

Best Formation + Armaments

Formation and Armaments are supposed to work perfectly with your commanders kit or you will find yourself very quickly in a disadvantage on the battlefield – and with so many variations it can be tough to stay on top. Here is what the works best in today’s meta:
