Immensely underestimated when released as most people saw him mandatory as the primary commander because of the damage factor of his primary skill – now we know that his other skill buffs and kit make up easily for this and he is a really strong commander that can wreck and you will see him in a lot of combos right now. Below I have my recommendations on how to build and use him to get the most out of him.
Current Ranking – is Honda S-Tier, A-Tier, or D-Tier?!
See how Honda Tadakatsu is ranking in the different game modes of Rise of Kingdoms in my current tier list here.

With his stars, you can fine-tune in what order you unlock his skills and level them so here’s my recommendation:
As with every legendary commander in Rise of Kingdoms, you really want to max out his first skill before taking it any further.
From here, I’d get Honda Tadakatsu to 3 Stars and max out his 2nd and 3rd skill, they contribute the most and with that setup of 5551 you’re already running a beast.
After all, I’d still invest further to max him out as he is really versatile and you can use Honda Tadakatsu in so many setups well.
The cool think about Honda Tadakatsu is that he not only not cares about troops types, he actually benefits from multiple troop types with his 4th skill so you can bring mixed marches of whatever mix and have great results (except the one built I show you below that is designed to be used with one troop type).
Best Commander Pairing
There are literally dozens of commander pairings that you can run Honda Tadakatsu with. I mean literally. Basically every commander that deals damage and can cycle through skills fast (to activate the damage over time skill of Honda) is a good pair to run him with as a secondary commander with pretty much any commander in Rise of Kingdoms.
When it comes to run Honda as the primary commander, here are my recommendations:
Running Honda primary with Tomyris secondary is a great setup as the stacking poison of Tomyris will give Honda a great active skill damage increase so running with multiple marches give that a great boost. The only downside I see here is that the rage cycle is not that great.
This is where Harald comes in great as a secondary commander as his 4th skill is considered active so all talents generating rage will fire off and make them deal insane counterattack and area damage. No combination I’d like to deal with to be honest.
Overall, Honda is a commander most players will use secondary though.

In terms of equipment, here’s what I recommend to use as the route for Honda:
|Helmet||Helm of Phoenix||Helm of Phoenix|
|Chest||Infantry Breastplate||Windswept Breastplate|
|Weapon||Vanguard Halberd||Staff of the Lost|
|Gloves||Leather Gloves||Seth’s Brutality|
|Boots||Sturdy Boots||Windswept Boots|
|Forge Time||26 Days||120 Days|
You have at the left side the absolute starter setup that you want to get when running him and at the right side you have the setup that most players run with this commander. ATTENTION! The best possible whale setup is NOT included here as it will not be obtainable for most players and I don’t want to list “best-of-the-best” here just for the sake of having it here. If you’re able to et the best gear for this commander, you don’t need to follow these recommendations anyway.
Best Builds For Honda Tadakatsu
Se there are basically two builds that make sense using with Honda, one is for primarily generating as much rage as possible as Honda struggles with generating rage fast enough to get his active skill going. The other one is perfect for running in situations where you will run lower on health, espcially Ark of Osiris.
Rage Generation Built
This is the built to run to generate rage and I have two versions here – one for running mixed troops and one for running only one troop type, whatever you will prefer in your sets of marches.
For running mixed troops, what I recommend with Honda, this is going to be the talent build to use:
First of all when building this (unless you have him maxed already), you want to make your way to Feral Nature as quick as possible, getting Rejuvenate first. This makes a huge difference in how much rage Honda generates ad give him a lot of versatility.
From here you can make it to Strategic Prowess as it will get better impact when you can use the active skill more frequently and for that you need the extra rage generation.
If you, for whatever reason, run only one troop type in your march with Honda Tadakatsu as the primary commander, you want to shift the talents a little bit like this:
You will not get Armored To The Teeth as this requires mixed troop marches and rather get the points into Latent Power that boosts the skill damage and you know that Honda will benefit from that for sure. It’s plain percentage and as a primary commander he has this high damage factor so it will pack some extra punch for sure.
Low Health Talent Build (Ark of Osiris)
This build is the one to run in Ark of Osiris where you will drop in health and this setup will do everything that you will run a powerful punch when being there that enemies won’t have much fun time dealing with Honda:
Again, you want to take Rejuvenate first to get the extra health generation and from there make it to Close Formation in the Leadership Tree. This will add 12% additional attack when your army has been reduced to 50% and this contributes strongly towards Honda’s kit.
Then get Clarity for the additional damage buff whenever you run a skill and then Strategic Prowess. This is a really good talent setup for Ark of Osiris and if you have Honda maxed, this also will be one nobody likes to deal with and that you also will see a lot there right now.
