Best Troops
Guan Yu is an infantry commander, but this primarily applies when you use him in the open field as his 3rd skill will only buff infantry units and also applies the march speed bonus on them. Also his talent build will be really into the Infantry Tree for open field so use infantry there. Rally doesn’t matter that much.
Best Commander Pairing for Guan Yu

Scipio Africanus (Prime) is overall the strongest pair you can think of with Guan Yu and you should make sure to fully build your Scipio Prime first before investing into Guan Yu. If you have both maxed you will dominate the open field like nothing else. Honda Tadakatsu is, for me, the second strongest commander pairing with Guan Yu as you will gain such an incredible march speed with infantry troops plus the reduced damage taken makes them along each other really viable. Leonidas is still a very viable pairing with Guan Yu as of 2023 with all the new commander we saw getting released to the game. Guan Yu deals a lot of damage while Leanidas makes them more durable and provides with a rage engine. Cheok Jun-Gyeong (CJ) is a little less-powerful commander pairing with Guan Yu with damage reduction but they are lacking some of the sustain abilities that Leonidas brings to the party. Alexander the Great with his shielding provides a ton of sustain for the march with Guan Yu and both are about infantry plus march speed makes them also a very good pairing for the open field.

Best Equipment Forge Order
In terms of equipment, here’s what I recommend to use as the route for Guan Yu. I have tailored this priority order that you can follow step-by-step to prevent forging and running equipment that is not useful or only provides a very small improvement. Follow the equipment path step-by-step and you will have the best and most economical gear:

How to unlock
And for the artifacts I have tested the different ones here so you can see which ones perform the best (of course I only tested/list the ones that make sense):
Horn of Fury is a great accessory to use with Guan Yu as it will help chaining the silencing effect as much as possible and that’s what you use Guan Yo for, right?.Ring of Doom is the other accessory that I recommend for Guan Yu for more damage, period. Some players like using Lucky Coin instead for the Expertise Skill, but triggering that should always come from your secondary commander and not the accessory for most efficency.
Best Builds For Guan Yu
Below you will find the talent tree builds for Guan Yu that make sense when running as the primary commander in any march in Rise of Kingdoms. Please also refer to the description below each talent tree as I explain a general route on how you should spend your talents there + some additional background for each talent build that I very likely will appreciate. Please mind, there are old builds around that are about picking up all the best stats with Guan Yu possible – but as of 2023 with all those newer high-skill damage commanders this will not work that well anymore and you rather search for something that reduces the damage you take or your Guan Yu march will be at an end pretty quickly. So, this is the built you want to do now.Skill Tree first to unlock Rejuvenate, it’s the most useful skill and you want to get that extra rage as fast as possible. From here do everything you can to go over to Feral Nature which will basically give you 10 rage with every attack statistically so also worth it without any doubt.Once you have that done you will go over to the Infantry Tree where you will make your way stright towards Strong of Body to get that nice extra health for your troops which will be very useful in many situations. No it’s time to get Entrenched in the Conquering Tree which is working also very well and not only buff all damage, it will also reduce all damage you take. Moment of Triumph is also a nice talent that you can pick up along the way and it will buff your output at least in the beginning of a battle.
This is the ‘old’talent built that you want to use before your kingdoms makes the newer commanders available (and only then!). Otherwise you really want to use the talent built shown above!First of all you want to go in the Skill Tree and unlock Rejuvenate for the obvious reason that Guan Yu’s versatility is based on his ability to get his silence active and that needs extra rage.In the Infantry Tree it’s time to get Hold The Line, which doesn’t sound that strong on plain paper but once you get swarmed (and I can promise you that you will), this will massively reduce the damage that you’re taking.Strong of Body is optional on the path to Hold The Line and you should still get it after unlocking Hold The Line because it’s plain and simple extra health for your troops led by Guan Yu.Now you can work your way up to max out the Infantry Tree, depending on how far you have Guan Yu leveld up.
Conclusion
I hope this guide for building Guan Yu helped you investing without wasting much time and resources. If you liked it or you further questions (or maybe also annnotations that you believe should be added here in this guide), please don’t hesitate to post them below in the commen section. Thanks for reading and have a great day and see you out in the kingdoms.
