Released along with Alexander Nevsky, Bertrand appeared kind of underwhelming in the first looks but running him along with the right pair of commanders he is actually a really strong primary commander that will buff a lot and add a lot of survivability to your march. Below I have my recommendations on how to build and use him to get the most out of him.
Bertrand is all about rallying, period. He is the primary commander you want to use that adds tankyness to your rallies and with all his skills that are basically built around running a full cavalry march and rally you will have a very solid setup there – especially for Ark of Osiris where you want to run that kind of march that can be tanky and withstand.
See how Bertrand is ranking in the different game modes of Rise of Kingdoms in my current tier list.
With his stars, you can fine-tune in what order you unlock his skills and level them so here’s my recommendation.
The main reason you need to actually max Bertrand out is that he is all about being the primary commander in rallying so there’s no way to run him without being maxed successfully, although his expertise doesn’t contribute that much as it does with other commanders:
If you really must or want, I’d max out his first two skills and work on the 3rd one after when taking him “pre-maturely” to your marches. The 4th skill is the skill with the least contribution and the healing factor doesn’t fall into account that much. But we’re talking real fine-tuning on a more theoretical level here – my recommendation is to max him out if you want to run him properly.
Cavalry. All cavalry. His skills and some talents are built around running as much cavalry as you can. I mean he has no skill or talent requiring to run cavalry exclusively, but if you want all the buffs you need to run as much cavalry as possible with Bertrand.
Best Commander Pairing
In theory, you can pair Bertrand up with lots of commanders as his kit is quite universal with adding tankiness but when looking at his main strengths (rally), there are only a couple commander that make sense and I’d always run Bertrand as the primary commander:
First of all and the most valuable pairing to run with Bertrand will be Alexander Nevsky without a doubt. You will get loads of damage from Nevsky, good synergy also on the cavalry and Bertrand adds the survivability that makes the pairing less a glass cannon as you would have it with Nevsky.
For me Cao Cao is also a valid pairing as he also adds a healing factor and more importantly adds some additional rage generation that is missing from Bertrand talent trees a little bit.
For open field,running a support commander as the secondary commander adds a lot of versatility. I like running Trajan here very well, but also commanders like Aethelflaed or even Mulan can be an option.

In terms of equipment, here’s what I recommend to use as the route for Bertrand:
|Helmet||Windswept War Helm||Abyssal Visage||Abyssal Visage|
|Chest||Windswept Breastplate||Dark Lord’s Blessing||Dark Lord’s Blessing|
|Weapon||Vanguard Halberd||Vanguard Halberd||Heart of the Saint|
|Gloves||Windswept Bracers||Iset’s Sufferance||Iset’s Sufferance|
|Leggins||Vanguard Greaves||Vanguard Greaves||Gladiator|
|Boots||Windswept Boots||Cloud Racers||Cloud Racers|
|Forge Time||49 Days||161 Days||272 Days|
You have at the left side the absolute starter setup that you want to get when running him. The middle step is where you fit in good alternatives to improve where it makes sense and at the right side you have the setup that most players run with this commander. ATTENTION! The best possible whale setup is NOT included here as it will not be obtainable for most players and I don’t want to list “best-of-the-best” here just for the sake of having it here. If you’re able to et the best gear for this commander, you don’t need to follow these recommendations anyway.
Best Builds For Bertrand du Guesclin
As I mentioned a couple of times above, Bertrand’s primary and almost exclusive use-case in Rise of Kingdoms is running as primary commander in rally situations and for me, there’s only one talent build that really makes sense (with some adaption if you want to, but more on that below):
With Emblazoned Shield and Disarm, you will get two really good talents that reduce the damage taken and also with useful talents on the way. Undying Fury is also useful for the extra rage generation that Bertrand really needs wherever possible.
Buckler Shield in the Conquering Tree is also useful to reduce the counterattack damage and the flat attack bonus buff on the way there is also welcome to boost damage up.
In the Defense Tree you can pick up more useful talents and you have a pretty stable one.
If you don’t want to use Disarm in the Cavalry Tree as you prefer to have a more flat buff instead of one that triggers with a 10% chance (still, I personally believe that Disarm is a must-have so I only give you the options) – you might want to invest those points into Medicinal Supplies in the Defense Tree that will give some healing factor. You might want to try both setups of talents to see what will suit you more.
