Best Troops

If you run him in the open field, he will be the secondary commander and it comes down to which commander you will pair him up with. If you run him as primary commander in your garrison, he will benefit from mixed troops, espcially when expertised.

Best Commander Pairing for Heraclius

Sargon

Scipio Africanus (Prime)
Scipio Africanus (Prime)
Harald Sigurdsson
Harald Sigurdsson
Honda Tadakatsu
Honda Tadakatsu
Tariq Ibn Ziyad
Tariq Ibn Ziyad

Sargon as the primary commander with heraclius as the secondary commander has a ton of synergy and both work really well together with a full infantry march. The way Sargons stacking debuff with the chance for additional shield works well and with the Skill Tree of Sargon you also get kind-of a rage engine. That means a ton of shield and with the area damage you can also do some great work (See full build here).

Scipio Africanus (Prime) is working great with a ton of commanders but with the attack and defense combined with a heraclius seconary providing shield and area damage is a really strong pairing as well (See full build here).

Harald Sigurdsson loves to have a secondary commander with shield and with Stamford bridge you can bring Heraclius shield in, deal circle area damage and have a great impact march (See full build here).

Honda Tadakatsu is a commander that is durable, is about mixed army types and can work really well with the skill kit of Heraclius. The only thing here that I don’t like too much is that you will not run Honda as the primary commander as this won’t make sense and you need good leadership gear on heraclius to make a decent march for the open field (at best) (See full build here).

Tariq Ibn Ziyad is normally not the best commander to run primary but with the high single-target damage he deals combined with Heraclius area damage and shielding, you have a pretty solid setup running that I also enjoyed testing (See full build here).

Best Talent Tree Builds For Heraclius

Below you will find the talent tree builds for Heraclius that make sense when running as the primary commander in any march in Rise of Kingdoms. Please also refer to the description below each talent tree as I explain a general route on how you should spend your talents there + some additional background for each talent build that I very likely will appreciate.

We talked about that Heraclius is not good in any open field situations where you run him as the primary commander, so the only valid talent tree build that makes sense for him is when you run him as a garrison commander where he can play out that garrison tree and with his circle-shaped area of effect damage he works well doing that.

First make your way to Impregnable and then get Divine Favor as this will reduce damage taken a lot but also increases damage Heraclius deals. If you use him to defend your garrison you want him maxed, so spend the leftover points into Burning Blood for more rage and No Weakness and then the last points in the Leadership Tree up to Armored to the Teeth. This all increases his stats where it helps, favors running multiple troop types and overall punish swarming any garrison running herclius as the primary commander pretty heavily.

Best Formation + Armaments

Formation and Armaments are supposed to work perfectly with your commanders kit or you will find yourself very quickly in a disadvantage on the battlefield – and with so many variations it can be tough to stay on top. Here is what the works best in today’s meta:
