How to Get and Spend Monochrome Wisely in Zenless Zone Zero

We write for players, not search engines — add us as a preferred source to support what we're doing.

Every meaningful jump in account power runs through the same bottleneck: pulls. Stronger teams need the right Agents, the right W-Engines, and enough copies to make them work together. Monochrome sits at the front of that chain as the paid premium currency in Zenless Zone Zero, and how you plan it decides whether your roster fills real gaps or collects unused characters. What follows covers where Monochrome comes from, which purchases return the most value, how to judge whether a character deserves your currency, and how that planning shifts depending on how much you spend.

Why Monochrome Planning Matters for Account Progress

A single S-Rank Agent can cost up to 180 pulls in the worst case. That is 28,800 Polychrome. Most accounts do not stall because players spend too little. They stall because currency lands on the wrong character at the wrong time.

Planning Monochrome means answering three questions before you open the store. What does my team actually lack? How much currency will close that gap? And can free income cover part of it before the banner ends?

How to Get Zenless Zone Zero Monochromes

Monochrome has no gameplay source. Real money is the only route. Two official sources exist inside the game, plus third-party channels selling the same packs.

Monochrome Market

The Market carries six tiers. Every tier doubles the first time you buy it.

Tier Price (USD) First purchase total Repeat purchase total
60 0.99 120 60
300 4.99 600 330
980 14.99 1,960 1,090
1,980 29.99 3,960 2,240
3,280 49.99 6,560 3,880
6,480 99.99 12,960 8,080

The first-purchase bonus is especially important when planning a top-up. As confirmed in the official Version 3.1 anniversary rewards announcement, the first-purchase double bonus in the Monochrome Market was reset when Version 3.1 launched on July 29, 2026. That means eligible purchases can once again receive the doubled first-purchase amount.

Inter-Knot Membership

The inter knot membership costs around 4.99 USD. It grants 300 Monochrome immediately, then 90 Polychrome on every daily login for 30 days. That totals 3,000 currency. You can extend it while fewer than 179 days remain.

When and Where to Top Up Monochrome

The Monochrome Market and Inter-Knot Membership cover different needs, but neither means you should top up automatically. Before spending, work out how much currency you actually need. Check your current pity, saved Polychrome, and any rewards you can still earn before the banner ends. If those resources already cover your target, there is little reason to buy more.

If there is still a gap, the in-game Monochrome Market is the most direct option, while third-party marketplaces give you another way to get the amount you need. For example, a ZZZ top up through U7BUY lets you choose a Monochrome package and complete the top-up using your ZZZ UID and server rather than sharing your account password.

The same rule applies no matter which option you choose: identify the character or W-Engine you want first, calculate the remaining currency gap, and choose the smallest sensible top-up that covers it.

How to Spend Monochrome Wisely

Once Monochrome reaches your account, the conversion matters. One Signal Search costs 160 Polychrome. Agent banner pity sits at 90 pulls, and the W-Engine channel runs a separate 80-pull pity with a 75 percent rate-up.

Here is how the main purchases compare in pure pull terms.

Purchase Price (USD) Polychrome Pulls Cost per pull
Inter-Knot Membership 4.99 3,000 18.75 About 0.27
980 tier, first purchase 14.99 1,960 12.25 About 1.22
6,480 tier, first purchase 99.99 12,960 81 About 1.23
6,480 tier, repeat 99.99 8,080 50.5 About 1.98
980 tier, repeat 14.99 1,090 6.81 About 2.20

The pattern is clear. The membership sits far ahead of everything else. First purchases across all tiers land near 1.20 to 1.35 per pull, while repeats drift toward 2.00 or worse.

That gives a workable priority order:

  1. Inter-Knot Membership. Best return in Zenless Zone Zero, provided you log in daily.
  2. New Eridu City Fund. The battle pass pays 680 Polychrome on purchase, more at milestone levels, and a selectable A-Rank W-Engine at level 30.
  3. Monochrome Market first purchases. Reach for these when a target is close and a bonus is live.
  4. Outfits and Bundle Shop items. Preference spending with no combat value.

Common Ways Players Waste Monochrome

  • Converting everything immediately. Agent outfits cost Monochrome, not Polychrome, and conversion runs one way only. Hold Monochrome until you know its destination.
  • Spending Polychrome on Battery Charge. The first refill costs 50 Polychrome, and eight refills drain 900 for 480 charge. That is over five pulls lost to farming energy.
  • Pulling on the Stable Channel with paid currency. The standard banner already grants a free S-Rank selector at 300 pulls, and free Master Tapes arrive constantly. Standard-pool Agents stay useful for a long time, so a solid Nekomata build is a far cheaper answer than paying to chase her.
  • Buying oversized packs. Reaching for the largest tier “to be safe” leaves thousands of idle Polychrome sitting in the account.
  • Panic topping up late in a banner. Count your pity and remaining event rewards first, then buy the smallest tier that closes the gap.

Which Characters Are Worth Your Monochrome?

Power rankings shift every patch. The decision logic behind them does not. Run a character through these filters before committing currency.

Does it fill a role your account lacks? Zenless Zone Zero splits Agents into Attack, Stun, Anomaly, Support, Defense, and Rupture. An account with three damage dealers and no Stun unit gains far more from a Stun Agent than from a fourth carry. Checking the best Agents in Zenless Zone Zero tier list helps here, but read it against your own roster rather than pulling for whoever sits highest.

Does it slot into more than one team? Versatile Supports and Stun units usually appear across several compositions, while attribute-locked carries often work in exactly one. A character that lifts three teams is worth more than a stronger one that lifts a single team. Looking at how teams in Zenless Zone Zero actually come together makes those overlaps easy to spot before you spend.

Does your existing roster already cover it? A new S-Rank that improves your best team by a small margin rarely beats finishing the build on a character you already own. Drive Discs, W-Engine upgrades, and skill levels cost no Monochrome at all.

Is a Mindscape or signature W-Engine the better buy? Sometimes a second copy or a signature engine for an established carry outperforms a brand-new character. Sometimes it does not. Before paying for either, check what that Agent still gains from gear alone. A properly tuned Zhu Yuan build closes part of the gap a Mindscape would otherwise cover, and it costs no Monochrome. The honest test is whether the upgrade unlocks content you currently cannot clear, not whether the numbers rise.

Are you clearing content already? If your account handles current endgame modes comfortably, no purchase is urgent. Saving through a patch costs nothing and leaves you ready for a character you genuinely want.

Plan Monochrome Around Your Account

Spending more does not automatically speed up progress. The players who progress fastest are the ones whose purchases match a specific gap.

Free and low-spending accounts. Free income across earlier versions averaged well over 100 pulls per patch through endgame modes, Agent stories, exploration, and events. That is enough to secure a chosen S-Rank most patches. If you add anything, add the Inter-Knot Membership. It roughly doubles a light account’s monthly pull income for the price of a coffee. Skip the Stable Channel entirely and let the 300-pull selector work in the background.

Moderate spenders. Membership plus battle pass runs about 15 USD a month and covers most single-target patches. Use the Monochrome Market only when a first-purchase bonus is available and a specific character sits within reach. If you have identified an Agent who fills a real team gap and you are short by a measurable amount, that is the moment to top up zzz at a better rate than the store charges, rather than pulling blind and hoping.

Higher spenders. The main risk shifts from having too little currency to spreading it too thin. Chasing every banner leaves a roster of half-built characters. Committing to one carry with its signature W-Engine and proper Drive Discs beats owning three carries at base investment.

Across all three, the same rule holds. Decide the target first, measure the gap second, and buy third. Reversing that order is how accounts end up with a full roster and no team that clears anything.

Conclusion

Monochrome only converts into progress when it lands on the right Agent at the right time. Getting it is simple, since the Monochrome Market and the Inter-Knot Membership are the only sources. Spending it well takes a plan: prioritise the membership and battle pass, save first purchases for real gaps, and judge every character by the hole it fills in your teams rather than by hype. Zenless Zone Zero gives out enough free currency that patient accounts stay competitive, and the players who spend well are usually the ones who spend deliberately.
