Building celestials and hypogean heroes in AFK Journey is probably the most important strategic part unless you spend a ton of money – these heroes can be so crucial to top teams and gatekeeper you from getting good rewards and the way you can actually build them through the shop copies and Stargazing takes so long that one or two bad decisions here might easily set you back a month or two in progress overall.

We decided we wanted to have an up-to-date (haha if you read a guide and Reinier is No. 1 you know it is far outdated….) that will actually help you not just by telling you what the ideal oder of building them should be, also by telling you why those heroes are so important to build and have. Of course, we update this list here with the current meta teams in AFK Journey and strongest heroes whenever a new batch is released.

These heroes here are a must to play for any player, in this order. No exception.

Elijah and Lailah

The first celestial hero to build in the game and no matter where you are, if you don't have the EX+15 on them right now, drop any hero you're building and do that just because they are meta in every Dream Realm boss. So relevant for PvE content and the way he works and scales that after the twins the most-needed celestial hero right now.

Incredible hero to invest in and after the Twins the second hypolestial to build actually. Still end of 2025 useful in so many modes and bosses that you should build him today.

Baelran

Today I would put him as number 3 since he is so dramatically important in almost all modes and so many top teams need him. And even with Season 5 approaching I don't see that changing...

Reinier

The last on the list here to have-to-build for all players as he is still quite relevant in many teams and useful enough to make an impact.

She really much pushes into the slot of Reinier with being better so if you haven't built Reinier, for sure build her instead and if you already have a more than well-built Reinier, think about if you want to build a Contess Supreme+ to work better than him.

Light Spenders Priority + PvP Focused Players

If you’re spending some money on the game (like pass, high-value pack here and there) you will be able to invest in a few more heroes, in particular the ones that do well in PvP modes:

Gunnar

This is a little bit of a early set but with the way Aliceth is making her way into early Dream Realm compositions in Season 5, I do think she will be quite important. But often times you need the classic Twins and Baelran for her teams as well so she is not a replacement in the top category to build. Lamentis

Also a very strong option for Dream Realm but with a grain of salt, we had other new hypolestials being super strong at release and the 2 months later gone from the leaderboards. His kit, though, looks more like he can stick around as a better Reinier option.

Taking over the PvP meta end of Season 5 and will have probably the biggest impact right not o be built before the other hypolestials.

She had a short domination period after relase but she is not dominating enough overall for most players to build and in the bigger picture F2P players and low spenders probably will always have to work on other hypolestials before even getting to her. These heroes are for players that not just spend here and there, this is only for players that actually spend frequently and significantly on the game (nothing wrong with that!), but these heroes here have rather niche uses so the return value is lower and players from the above categories will just not see their resources slowly spent here met with a return value that is worth it
