Class selection in Sword x Staff is probably one of the most controversial topic discussed and I am sure this is not the first site you opened that offers a answer to that question. Well, I will be honest with you and the most accurate answer to the questions is the most hated one: it depends. But please hear me out, I think I am able to answer your question what class is actually the best for you in Sword x Staff here by showing things beyond the easy this-is-the-class slob other sources offers as their flagship guides for Sword x Staff.
What The Class Selection Does & Why It Depends On YOU
I could go on and on about the classes and in a perfect paper world with all maxed gear and skills all classes become quite similar in what they can do – but that is the point here, we are not living in that perfect world where all of us have maxed account! Our ranking below takes that into account and if you open the descriptions you will see how well a class does without selling your car or putting an extra mortage on yur house (also called F2P or low-spender players) and how well a class does if you actually spend significantly. Right now that means the Duelist path is the best performing with low investment and the Sage/Arcanist is the best when having all well-built but that requires investment. With that in mind, you can actually choose a class that works well for you(r) budget. Sorry, don’t kill the messenger here, I didn’t design the game and the monetization, this is just the reality of us testing for hundreds of hours.
Class Progression
If you have still some questions about class progression, it is a journey through your server that normally looks like this:
- Day 1 to Day 4 you will have the Basic Classes Warrior and Mage
- Day 4 to Day 12 you will use the T2 Classes which are Duelist, Knight, Sorcerer and Sage
- Day 12 and onwards you will have the T3 classes
- T4 becomes available with Season 2
So your start playing and your server progresses through the seasons which unlock new classes that you can unlock once you reach the region and level for it.

A Class Tanking in Sword x Staff That is Not Entirely Botched
So… here we are with our rankings that we tried to keep as light as possible to not overwhelm you (as potential new player in Sword x Staff) but also crack down the reality as it is so you will not hit a wall later with your class choice. Please also mind we linked our build recommendations for each class to give you a good initial idea where to take a class.
Please open the details of a class to see our description and ranking for F2P or Spenders!
Base Classes
Available after the Starter Days on your server (Day 1-4)
Tier The Warrior class excels in mobility and high damage output, utilizing lifesteal and cheat-death mechanics to overcome significant power deficits. However, it requires heavy investment for certain techniques to be effective and can struggle with range limitations and early-game elemental variety.

Tier The Mage class offers a high damage ceiling with versatile elemental techniques and fun AoE builds that excel at clearing enemies. However, it is the squishest class in the game with minimal defensive layers and can struggle with low critical hit rates without specific gear or abilities.

T2 Classes
Aailable when reaching Cinder Ridge region and Level 44 on your server (past Day 4 on your server normally)
Tier The Duelist class excels at pushing combat power deficits due to its high damage output, exceptional movement, and survivability through cheat death passives and lifesteal. However, it faces limitations in the early game with restricted elemental affinities and can be hindered by heavy investment requirements and melee range constraints against certain enemies.

Tier The Knight class excels in survivability, using consistent blocking and the Rebound skill to push through difficult AoE content and multi-hit enemies. However, it suffers from awkward stat priorities and a Glass Cannon build that is only viable under specific, low-pressure conditions or with a dedicated tank.

Tier The Sorcerer class offers a high damage ceiling with versatile elemental techniques and enjoyable AoE builds. However, it is extremely squishy due to a lack of defensive layers and struggles with early-game crit rates without specific gear or skills.

Tier The Sage is a highly versatile class offering diverse playstyles and unique healing or resurrection abilities that become essential for high-level dungeons. However, it remains a squishy class that cannot tank effectively and requires significant time to fully unlock certain advanced builds.

T3 Classes
Aailable when reaching Aqualis region and Level 82 on your server (past Day 12-14 on your server)
Tier The Berserker class excels in mobility and damage, utilizing cheat death mechanics and lifesteal to overcome significant combat power deficits. However, it requires heavy investment in techniques and faces range limitations as a melee class with restricted early-game elemental affinities.

Tier The Paladin is a highly resilient class that excels at surviving against multi-hit enemies and pushing through high-difficulty content thanks to its defensive layers and versatile DPS options. However, it suffers from cumbersome stat priorities and requires specific conditions, like a dedicated tank, to safely utilize its glass cannon build.

Tier The Archmage excels with a high damage ceiling and versatile, flashy AoE builds across most elements, ensuring efficient enemy elimination. However, it is the squishiest class in the game due to a lack of defensive layers and struggles with early-game crit rates without specific gear or Mana Surge.

Tier The Arcanist is a highly versatile class offering various playstyles and unique access to healing and resurrection, which are vital for difficult dungeons. However, it remains a squishy class that cannot tank at high levels, and many of its specialized builds require significant time to unlock.

T4 Classes
These classes become available in Season 2 on your server in Sword x Staff (mind, server progression is individual so if you start playing just a few days ago, your server has more time until entering Season 2)
Tier Finally able to switch more into Elemental damage rather than being locked into physical damage really opens up the class in terms of flexibility.
Tier The guardian class gets some more love int erms of being able to deal damage.
Tier With some many options, this class feels the most letdown probably because there was already so much going on before. freeze is not reliable anymore but still there is a lot to do once you're able to have your skills well leveled.
Tier Enemies get more sturdy and DoT is quite hard to use reliably so Season 2 might be tough if you pick this class without really loving it.
